CAMPANIA WINE REGION — SANNIO
Capua · Sessa Aurunca · Padula · Pietrelcina, Campania
“The Campania hinterland behind Naples and Sorrento — Caserta’s Roman plains, the Sannio and Irpinia wine hills, and the Vallo di Diano monastery country, all inside the 7% flat-tax zone.”
About this region
A closer look
Inland Campania — the territory that wraps around Naples and reaches behind the Sorrento peninsula — is the densest concentration of eligible small towns in the region. Naples (NAP) is the airport anchor; the Sorrento coast and the Amalfi are an hour south; and almost every comune in between sits below the 30,000-inhabitant ceiling of Art. 24-ter.
The featured towns trace a north-to-south line through the hinterland. Capua and Sessa Aurunca sit in the Caserta province north of Naples — Roman Capua was once the second city of Italy, while Sessa Aurunca crowns the slopes of the Roccamonfina volcano above the Falerno del Massico vineyards. Further inland, Pietrelcina is Padre Pio’s birthplace in the Sannio hills behind Benevento; at the southern edge, Padula sits in the Vallo di Diano around the UNESCO Certosa di San Lorenzo.
This is also the wine half of Campania. Falerno del Massico on the Caserta side, Aglianico del Taburno and Falanghina del Sannio in the Benevento hinterland, Taurasi, Greco di Tufo, and Fiano di Avellino on the Irpinia hills — every major Campanian DOC and DOCG falls inside this collection’s footprint. Inventory leans towards stone case in the centro storico, restored country houses with land, and small farmhouses in the wine villages.
